V-NISSG Proof of Competence: What You Need to Know
As of 1 June 2024, a new legal requirement applies in Switzerland: Anyone performing certain treatments using non-ionising radiation must hold an officially recognised proof of competence. As a certified V-NISSG partner, EY Esthetic guides Studios and practices through the entire process, from the initial consultation to successful certification.
What is the V-NISSG?
The acronym stands for the Ordinance to the Federal Act on Protection against Hazards from Non-Ionising Radiation and Sound. In practice, this means that treatments involving laser, IPL, and other regulated technologies may only be performed by individuals who have obtained the relevant proof of competence. The regulation is designed to protect clients and practitioners alike.
How is the proof of competence structured?
The proof of competence consists of three modules, each building on the last.
Fundamentals Module This module covers the core medical knowledge required: anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of skin and hair, changes affecting skin, vessels, nails, and tissue, along with the professional assessment of these structures.
Technologies Module This module addresses the technical foundations of all V-NISSG-regulated procedures. These include optical radiation sources such as laser and IPL, and, depending on the specialisation, also radiofrequency, ultrasound, cryolipolysis, plasma, or shockwave.
BKF Module – Treatment-Specific Knowledge and Skills The BKF module is the most hands-on of the three. It focuses on the specific treatment type for which the proof of competence is being obtained. There are seven different BKF modules in total, covering the full range of applicable treatments.
Which pathway applies to me?
There are two training pathways, depending on prior qualifications.
Without a recognised prior qualification, the training begins with the Fundamentals module, followed by Technologies, and then the relevant BKF module. The full programme takes between two and eleven days, depending on the proof of competence being sought.
With a recognised prior qualification — for example, as a Kosmetikerin EFZ, Kosmetiker EFZ, or with a comparable professional qualification — the Fundamentals module is generally waived. Participants enter directly at the Technologies module and then complete an extended BKF module that integrates the foundational content in a condensed format.
Do I need to repeat everything for each additional treatment?
No. Modules already completed remain credited. Someone who holds the proof of competence for laser hair removal and later wishes to become certified for tattoo removal will generally only need to complete the corresponding BKF module.
